A Few Definitions 

From: ASME A17.1 - 2004 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators

Sidewalk Elevator - an elevator of the freight type operating between a landing in a sidewalk or other exterior area and floors below the sidewalk or grade level. It opens onto the exterior area through a horizontal opening.

Elevator Truck Zone - the limited distance above an elevator landing within which the truck-zoning device permits movement of the elevator car.

Elevator Truck-Zoning Device - a device that will permit the operator in the car to move a freight elevator within the truck zone with the car door or gate and a hoistway door open.

This is a rather large sidewalk elevator...it has 3 bow-irons.

Basement bucket elevator made by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A.
This particular one was used to remove coal ash from a building's boiler room.
